Smashed Brussel Sprouts Recipe
Oven-Roasted Smashed Brussels Sprouts: Crispy and Flavorful Side Dish
Brussels sprouts, with their petite size and bold flavor, have been gaining more popularity in recent years. When prepared as smashed and roasted, their flavor truly doubles. This recipe offers a healthy and fun alternative for those who might typically shy away from traditional vegetable dishes.
Characteristics and Benefits of Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts belong to the cruciferous vegetable family, alongside broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Despite their small size, they are incredibly nutrient-dense, packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Key benefits of Brussels sprouts include:
- Boosting immunity: Rich in vitamin C, they help support the immune system.
- Promoting heart health: High in fiber and potassium, they contribute to cardiovascular well-being.
- Antioxidant powerhouse: Contain potent antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.
- Digestive health: With their high fiber content, they support gut health and help keep you feeling full for longer.
Inspiration
This recipe was inspired by smashed potatoes. Honestly, I didn’t expect such a fantastic result. I’ve always enjoyed Brussels sprouts in classic recipes like sautéed Brussels sprouts with olive oil, but I never considered them the most extraordinary vegetable. However, after trying this recipe, I found myself questioning if Brussels sprouts might actually be the best vegetable ever!
Tips for the Perfect Recipe
- Size Matters: Choose small, evenly-sized Brussels sprouts for uniform cooking. If your sprouts vary in size, you can cut the larger ones in half.
- Boiling Stage: Cook the sprouts until they’re just tender enough for a fork to pierce easily. Avoid overcooking, as they may fall apart in the oven.
- Smashed but Intact: While flattening the sprouts, press gently to avoid turning them into a complete mash. You can use a glass, jar, or spatula for this step.
- Roasting Time: Allow enough time in the oven for the edges to caramelize and crisp up. The magic of this dish lies in the contrast between the crispy exterior and soft interior.
Serving Suggestions
Hot and crispy right out of the oven, smashed Brussels sprouts pair wonderfully with meat, fish, or chicken dishes. They can also be enjoyed on their own as a snack. Serve them with a dipping sauce for a chip-like experience.
For the sauce shown in the photo:
Mix yogurt, mayonnaise, and hot chili sauce for a simple yet delicious dip. Alternatively, try ranch dressing or garlic yogurt for a flavorful twist.
To enjoy this dish at its best, serve immediately after taking it out of the oven. While the flavor remains intact over time, the sprouts will lose their crispiness as they cool.
