Caramelized Onion Pilav Recipe

Rice pilaf is one of the indispensable staples of our tables. However, from time to time, we may get tired of classic pilaf recipes and start looking for new flavors. That’s exactly where caramelized onion pilaf comes in.
Although caramelized onion rice pilaf resembles both iç pilav (Turkish-style spiced rice with nuts and currants) and mujaddara (a Middle Eastern lentil and rice dish), this recipe brings a completely unique flavor to your table.
Tips for the Recipe
First, slice the onion into half-moons. This cutting method, also used in classic caramelized onion recipes, ensures that the onions cook evenly and develop a perfect flavor as they caramelize.
Sauté the onions over low heat until soft. This slow cooking process allows their natural sweetness to emerge fully.
Once the onions soften, add 1 teaspoon of sugar and continue cooking until they are deeply caramelized. The sugar helps speed up the caramelization process.
Keep the heat low throughout the cooking process—this will help the pilaf cook slowly without burning or evaporating the water too quickly.
When serving, sprinkle with chopped parsley (or any fresh herbs you like). The parsley adds a fresh touch and makes the dish visually more appealing.
Dishes That Pair Well with Caramelized Onion Pilaf
Caramelized onion rice pilaf pairs wonderfully with meat and chicken dishes. For example, it goes perfectly with simple, unadorned meats such as baked lamb in parchment or döner-style beef, as well as with chicken dishes like chicken piccata or oven-baked parmesan chicken bites.
You can round out these menus with ayran, cacık (yogurt with cucumber and herbs), or a fresh salad.
