  • 1 egg,
  • 1 tablespoon butter,
  • 3/4 cups warm milk,
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water,
  • 1 small package active dry yeast,
  • 1/4 cup sugar,
  • 4-5 cups flour,
  • Vegetable oil for frying,
  • Cherry jam for filling,
  • Powdered sugar for topping.


  1.  Put 3 cups of the flour into a large mixing bowl,
  2. Add sugar and yeast into the flour,
  3. Mix together the milk, water and the melted butter in a separate bowl,
  4. Break the egg into the flour mix and slowly begin to stir the egg and flour together,
  5. Knead the dough by adding milk mixture slowly into the dough,
  6. Allow this mixture to sit in a warm place until dough doubles,
  7. Roll out dough to a thickness of 0.5 cm,
  8. Using a glass or a biscuit cutter, cut out round pieces,
  9. Put 1 teaspoon of cherry jam on half of the round pieces and put the remaining pieces on the jammed ones,
  10. Place the round pieces on a large cookie sheet and cover with a cloth or plastic wrap,
  11. Allow to rise until double in size,
  12. Heat the oil in a large pot or deep fryer,
  13. Fry each Berliner turning to make sure all sides brown nicely,
  14. Place fried Berliners on drainer to drain the excess oil and allow to cool,
  15. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
