Domates Civesi Recipe
Unfortunately, domates civesi is one of the flavors of Antalya cuisine that hasn't gained as much recognition as Antalya piyaz. For years, I've read so many cookbooks, watched cooking shows, and yet I only heard its name a few years ago. When I first tried it, I didn't tell my husband what it was or where it was from. The first thing he asked was if it was an Italian dish. The combination of tomatoes and basil really gives it a scent and flavor reminiscent of Italian cuisine. If you enjoy Italian flavors, domates civesi should definitely be on your list of things to try.
When I first heard of domates civesi, it reminded me of our domates yemeği recipe. I even thought it might taste like it as well, but the taste is completely different. Domates civesi has more onions and, with the addition of basil, it has a flavor that is quite different from a simple domates yemeği. I spent my childhood eating domates yemeği, and I really enjoy it, but I must admit that domates civesi is tastier than a regular domates yemeği. That's why I think it should gain as much fame as Antalya style piyaz very soon.
It's very easy to make, cooks quickly, is very light, and very healthy. If you want to increase the fiber content, you can use bulgur or brown rice instead of white rice. The taste will definitely change, but it will never be bad.
I used pear tomatoes, known as Çanakkale tomatoes in Turkey. They are slightly smaller in size compared to standard round tomatoes. If you're using standard round tomatoes, you can reduce the quantity or leave it the same, as having more tomatoes won't hurt and can make the dish even more tomato-rich.
