Sarma (Stuffed Vine Leaves) Recipe Sarma (Stuffed Vine Leaves) Recipe


  • 400 g of vine leaves in brine,
  • 1 cup rice,
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste,
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper powder,
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil,
  • Salt,
  • Pepper,
  • Water.


  1. Put the leaves in water and let stand over night,
  2. Soak with plenty of water,
  3. Take the oil and shredded onion in a sauté pan,
  4. Add tomato paste and red pepper powder and stir,
  5. Add rice and cook, stirring a few minutes,
  6. Add salt and spices you want and mix well, than remove from heat,
  7. Put a heaped teaspoon of rice mixture on to each leaf as shown on the photograph and roll,
  8. Add water just covering the rolls,
  9. Cook at low heat until soft.
