Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe
I adapted the caramelized onion dip recipe from Gordon Ramsay's caramelized onion everything dip. In his recipe, Ramsay mixes caramelized onions with cream cheese, crème fraîche, buttermilk, and black and white sesame seeds. Instead of cream cheese and other dairy products, I used yogurt, which is more popular and easier to find in Turkey. I also replaced the sesame seeds with tahini. Although it might have deviated significantly from the original flavor, the resulting new taste turned out to be very delicious.
To prepare caramelized onions quickly, I used the 5-minute caramelized onion recipe. It's definitely a lifesaver. After preparing the caramelized onions, the rest is quite simple. Just wait for the caramelized onions to cool down, then mix them with yogurt and tahini.
Although garlic is usually used in yogurt-based salads, there's no need for it in this recipe because the dominant flavor is the caramelized onion. However, if you feel that the taste and aroma of the onions alone are not enough, you can add a clove of fresh garlic.
Typically, olive oil is drizzled on top to garnish mezes. Since both caramelized onions and tahini contain oil, I didn't want to add extra oil. But if it's not an issue for you, feel free to drizzle some olive oil on top. You can also substitute the walnuts and dill with different ingredients such as almonds and parsley.
