Baked Popcorn Chicken Recipe
Popcorn Chicken: A Healthy and Delicious Twist
Popcorn chicken is a chicken dish named after its appearance and presentation. As you may know, the word "popcorn" refers to popped corn in English, and these small chicken pieces are named so because their bumpy texture resembles popcorn when cooked. First gaining popularity in the early 1990s at a fast-food restaurant chain, popcorn chicken has since become a famous snack for its quick and satisfying taste. While the original recipe involves deep frying, today, we’re presenting a healthier alternative.
Popcorn chicken is often a favorite among children and teens, but its crispy exterior and tender interior make it equally loved by adults. This oven-baked version is a healthier take on the classic recipe. Visually and ingredient-wise, it’s somewhat similar to sweet and sour chicken. By using less oil, this recipe doesn’t compromise on flavor while supporting a healthy eating routine. You can also easily make this recipe using an air fryer for added convenience.
Serving Suggestions
Serve your popcorn chicken warm. Pair it with steamed vegetables or a side of steamed rice for a complete meal.
Tips for Success
- Uniform Size: Ensure that the chicken pieces are cut to the same size to cook evenly.
- Crispy Texture: Allow the chicken to bake until sufficiently crisp. While baking, the chicken will release some moisture, which may soften the bottom. Continue baking until the moisture evaporates and the bottom becomes crispy. Before removing the chicken from the oven, ensure the undersides are dry and firm.
- Oil Application: Using a spray bottle for olive oil ensures even browning while reducing the amount of oil used. If you don’t have a spray bottle, drizzle the oil over the chicken pieces with a teaspoon.
- Air Fryer Option: This recipe can also be prepared in an air fryer for quicker results.
Health Benefits of This Recipe
This version is much healthier than the traditional deep-fried method. By baking, you avoid trans fats and enjoy a lighter meal. Additionally, the homemade sauce allows you to skip the additives and excessive sugar often found in store-bought popcorn chicken, making it a better choice overall.
